Tracking Compliance in HR

I Before E Except After…

I before E except after C, and in words that sound like A, such as in neighbor or weigh. Most of us were taught this grammatical rule at a young age, but have you ever noticed how inconsistent it is? Exceptions to this rule are words such as “weird”, “forfeit” and “seize”.

Exceptions can drive you crazy!

Most people like to manage the rule and not the exception. The English language and employment law compliance could be best buds based on their confusing and not very consistent rules. Keeping up with compliance laws can make you question all of the rules you worked so hard to remember.

HR Exceptions are a compliance nightmare.

Just when you think you have mastered compliance they send you a curveball.

For example, leaves of absence compliance should be simple, right? If you are an employer with less than 50 employees, you don’t have to worry too much about compliance, but rather you decide what you want to offer your employees. If you have more than 50 employees, you follow FMLA rules. Easy! Wrong! The exception is if you live in a state that offers additional leave programs. Now you have more rules, deadlines, and paperwork to remember!

Form I-9 Compliance is black and white, right? You have 3 days from the date of hire to complete the employer portion of the I-9 form and verify documentation in person. Oh wait, the exception is if it is a pandemic and your employees are remote! You can then verify the documents virtually and not in person. What?! (This exception may expire 4/30/2022. Not only do you have to remember an exception, but you have to remember how long it is an exception to the rule).

Manage the rule and we will help with HR exceptions!
